When is the best time to visit Bohuslan?

The short answer: it depends on what you're after.

For swimming and buzz: July-August is peak season. Warmest water, longest days, most restaurants open. But also the most people and highest prices.

For seafood and calm: September-October is our personal favourite. The lobster premiere in late September, fresh shellfish everywhere, fantastic autumn colours and almost no queues. Prices are often half of summer.

For adventure and solitude: November-March is true low season. Wind-swept cliffs, dramatic light and you share the coast with just a handful of locals. Perfect if you want to truly recharge.

Accommodation — why book direct?

Bohuslan offers everything from campsites to luxury hotels, but cabin rental is the classic choice — and for good reason. You get space, a kitchen, freedom and an experience that feels like actually living here.

When you book directly with a host instead of through a booking platform, you get:

  • No platform fees: save 10-15% compared to Airbnb or Booking.com
  • More flexible cancellation: we can always talk about it
  • Personal contact: questions about the area, restaurant tips, help with activities
  • Local insider tips: we live here and know which beaches are empty

Roda huset suits families and larger groups with space for up to 10, a large garden and hot tub. Vita Torpet is perfect for couples or small families wanting peace and nature, with room for up to 4 guests.

  • Hiking boots or sturdy sandals
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Insect repellent (evenings near forest)
  • Snorkel mask — clear water and plenty to see
  • No fishing licence needed — crab fishing is free

Off-season (October-April)

How to get to Bohuslan

From Gothenburg (1.5 hours)

The most common route. Take the E6 north and turn off towards Uddevalla/Lysekil. The last 40 minutes run along beautiful coastal roads — part of the experience. Gothenburg Landvetter airport has direct flights from most Swedish cities and many European destinations.

From Stockholm (5 hours)

Drive the E20 to Gothenburg then E6 north, or take E18/E45 for a more scenic route through Varmland. Alternatively: fly to Gothenburg (50 min) and rent a car.

From Copenhagen (4 hours)

Over the Oresund Bridge then E6 through Halland. A comfortable motorway drive with lovely stops along the way.

From Germany

For German visitors, there are several good options:

  • From Hamburg/Kiel: Stena Line ferry from Kiel to Gothenburg (14 hours, overnight crossing), then 1.5 hours north. Comfortable and relaxing.
  • From Rostock/Travemunde: Ferry to Trelleborg, then drive north (5-6 hours).
  • Drive the whole way: Hamburg to Lysekil is about 900 km via Denmark and the Oresund Bridge (9-10 hours with breaks).

Most routes are toll-free, but if you drive via Denmark you pay the Oresund Bridge toll. Border checks can also occur within Schengen, so bring valid ID.

Insider tips from us

Buy fish at the harbour. Fiskeback and Lysekil harbour have fish sales directly from the boats. Smoked fish, prawns and fresh catch at half the restaurant price.

Best fika spots. Skip the most touristy cafes at the harbour and seek out one of the local bakeries in Lysekil centre instead. For fika with a view, head to Stangehuvud — bring your thermos and cinnamon buns.

Hidden beaches. Everyone goes to the well-known bathing spots, but along the nearby coast — about a 15-minute walk from the cabins — there are cliffs and small coves that you'll often have entirely to yourself. Ask us when you book — we're happy to share our secret spots.

Shop on the way. Lysekil has ICA and Coop supermarkets, but the range is limited compared to Uddevalla. Do your big shop in Uddevalla on the way, especially if you have specific preferences.

Book activities in advance during summer. Shellfish safaris, kayak tours and popular restaurants fill up fast in July. Book at least a week ahead.

When is the best time to visit Bohuslan?+

It depends on what you're after. July-August has the best swimming weather but the most tourists and highest prices. September-October is perfect for seafood, hiking and peace at much lower prices. May is wonderful with lush green landscapes and few visitors. Even winter has its charm — dramatic storms and total seclusion.

How long does it take to drive to Bohuslan?+

From Gothenburg it's about 1.5 hours. From Stockholm 5 hours (or 50 min flight + 1.5 hr drive). From Copenhagen 4 hours. From Hamburg about 9-10 hours by car, or take the Stena Line ferry from Kiel to Gothenburg (14 hours overnight).

What does a week's holiday in Bohuslan cost?+

For a family of four: expect 12,000-20,000 SEK/week in peak season (cabin, food, activities) and 11,000-18,000 SEK in low season. Many of the best experiences — hiking, rock bathing, crab fishing — are completely free.

Do you need a car in Bohuslan?+

Yes, a car is strongly recommended. Public transport exists but is limited, especially to beaches and nature areas outside Lysekil centre. With a car you can explore the entire coast freely and visit neighbouring villages like Smogen, Fjallbacka and Grundsund.

Why book a cabin directly instead of through Airbnb?+

When you book directly with the host, you save the platform fee (10-15%), get more flexible cancellation and personal contact. We can help with local tips, restaurant bookings and activities — something a platform can never offer.
