1. Stangehuvud nature reserve — the ultimate cliff walk
Ask anyone from Lysekil where to hike and the answer is always the same: Stangehuvud. This nature reserve is just 15 minutes from town and offers a walk you'll never forget.
The trail takes you across bare granite cliffs with views over the open sea, through windswept pine forests and past natural rock formations that look like sculptures. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Skagerrak.
Our tip: Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds during peak season. Bring a thermos and enjoy fika on the rocks.
2. Kuststigen — the Lysekil section
Kuststigen is one of Sweden's most famous long-distance trails and the section through Lysekil is one of the finest. The 12-kilometre stretch takes you from cliffs to fishing villages, from forest to open waves.
Be prepared: The trail is hilly and rocky in places. Good hiking boots are a must. Allow 4-6 hours including fika breaks and photo stops.
Practical tips for Kuststigen
- Start early — the trail takes longer than you think
- Pack lunch, there are few food options along the way
- Check the weather forecast — exposed sections can be windy
- Mark the starting point on Google Maps before you set off
3. Stangenas nature reserve
A gentler walk through old beech forest and along sheltered bays. Stangenas is perfect for families or when you want a relaxing stroll without major elevation changes.
The reserve is also excellent for birdwatching, especially in spring when the seabirds are nesting.
4. Bokenasleden
A half-day hike through varied landscape — oak and beech forest, pastures with sea views and garden-like clearings. The trail is well-marked and moderately challenging.
5. Gullmarsskogen
A short but lovely forest loop suitable for everyone. The trail partly follows the Gullmarsfjorden with fine views across the water. Perfect for an afternoon walk when you want to get moving without committing to a full day.
6. Pinnevik loop
A wonderful coastal walk with varied terrain. You'll pass rocky beaches, small coves and tall pine forest. Just the right length for a half-day outing.
Hiking in autumn and winter
Many visitors think of hiking as a summer activity, but Bohuslan is fantastic during off-season too. Autumn brings dramatic colour changes, wilder seas and almost empty trails.
In winter, the air is crystal clear and the rocks take on a raw beauty. Dress in layers and bring a thermos — you'll have the trails almost entirely to yourself.

Our cabins are perfectly situated for hikers. Vita Torpet is surrounded by nature with peaceful forest walks from the door. Röda huset is about a 15-minute walk from coastal trails and nature reserves.
Both cabins have fully equipped kitchens where you can cook a proper dinner after a day on the trails, and Röda huset's hot tub is perfect for soothing tired muscles.
What is the best hike near Lysekil?+
Stangehuvud nature reserve is the most popular and spectacular hike. It's just 15 minutes from Lysekil and offers dramatic rock formations and ocean views. For longer hikes, the Kuststigen Lysekil section is unbeatable.
Can you hike in Bohuslan in winter?+
Absolutely! Many trails are open year-round. Stangehuvud and Stangenas are especially beautiful in winter with fewer visitors and dramatic landscapes. Dress warmly and wear good shoes — the rocks can be slippery when wet.
Are the hiking trails family-friendly?+
Yes, several trails suit families. Stangenas nature reserve and Gullmarsskogen are both easy and short enough for children. Stangehuvud works well with older children too, but the cliffs require attention with younger ones.
How do I get to Stangehuvud from Lysekil?+
Stangehuvud is about 3 km north of Lysekil centre. You can drive there in 5 minutes (there's a small car park at the entrance) or walk from town in about 30-40 minutes. From our cabins it's roughly 15 minutes by car.
