There are two ways to experience Bohuslan when the autumn storms roll in. You can sit in a hot tub on the rocks with sweeping views across the Bohuslan landscape. Or you can curl up in a newly renovated cabin with a fireplace, a book and a glass of wine while the rain drums against the windowpanes. With us, you get to choose — or do both during the same holiday.

Hot tub with views — why autumn and winter are the best seasons

Roda huset has a hot tub perched on granite rocks with open views. In summer, it is wonderful. But in autumn and winter? It is magical.

Picture this: the water temperature is 38 degrees. The air outside is cold and briny. Steam rises toward a star-filled sky that you never see in the city. Around you, the Bohuslan landscape stretches out in stillness. This is the kind of experience that makes you stop scrolling and start breathing.

The best evenings are actually when it is windy. The contrast between the warm water and the cold sea air makes the experience more intense. And after an hour in the hot tub, you will sleep like a baby.

Practical hot tub tips

  • It takes about 2-3 hours to heat the tub, plan ahead
  • We recommend starting the heating in the afternoon for an evening soak
  • Towels are provided in the cabin, but bring extras if there are many of you
  • The hot tub is available year-round, even in sub-zero temperatures

Vita Torpet — the cozy alternative

Not everyone wants views and open space. Sometimes the cosiest thing you can do is shut out the world in a small cabin surrounded by greenery.

Vita Torpet has been recently renovated with care for both comfort and character. There is a modern kitchen, lovely natural light and a garden with a greenhouse where you can sit even when it drizzles.

This is a place built for slowing down. In the morning, you drink coffee by the kitchen window and watch the birds. In the evening, you cook dinner with local ingredients and let time pass. No musts, no schedules.

Remote work from the coast

Both cabins have stable WiFi, making them perfect for combining work and holiday. We have had many guests who work a few hours in the morning and explore Bohuslan in the afternoon.

What a workday might look like

  • 07:00: Morning walk in the surroundings or through the garden
  • 08:00: Breakfast with views (Roda huset) or in the garden (Vita Torpet)
  • 09:00-12:00: Focused work at the kitchen table or on the sofa
  • 12:30: Lunch with a walk to the nearest beach
  • 14:00-16:00: Final work session
  • 16:30: Hiking, kayaking or just a dip in the sea
  • 19:00: Dinner from local ingredients, perhaps from Lysekil's fish shop

The trick is breaking your usual patterns. When you swap commuting for a morning walk in nature, you quickly notice that productivity does not decrease — it increases.

Rainy days in the cabin — when it blows too hard to go out

Bohuslan has its share of weather. It rains. It blows. And that is part of the charm. When the storm is at its peak, here are some of our favourite activities:

Cook with local ingredients. Lysekil's fish shop is legendary. Buy fresh prawns, a couple of crabs or a fine fish and make a proper west coast dinner in the cabin. Both kitchens are fully equipped for ambitious cooking projects.

Board games and books. Bring a favourite board game from home or browse our bookshelves. When the rain hits the window and you have a warm cup of tea in your hand, you understand why people keep coming back to the west coast.

Storm watching from the window. At Roda huset, you can gaze across the landscape from the kitchen window and watch the weather roll in from the distant sea. It is nature TV in real time, and it is better than any streaming service.

Hot tub and cosy reset. Enjoy a long soak in the hot tub at Roda huset, then head indoors to warm up with tea and a board game. Repeat. It is one of our favourite rainy-day routines.

Storm watching from the cliffs

When it really blows — and it does in Bohuslan, especially between October and March — you can head out to the rocks for one of the most dramatic nature experiences on the Swedish west coast.

The coast around Lysekil, just a fifteen-minute walk from the cabins, offers dramatic views during storms. Spray flies and the sound is almost intoxicating. Keep a safe distance, but enjoy the power. There are few things that make you feel as alive as standing on a cliff in a full storm.

Packing checklist for off-season Bohuslan

Packing right makes all the difference for an off-season holiday on the west coast. Here is our recommendation:

  • Layers, layers, layers: temperatures shift quickly between sun and wind
  • Wind and waterproof outer layer: essential
  • Good hiking boots: the rocks are slippery when wet
  • Swimwear: for the hot tub, regardless of season
  • Thermos and snacks: for fika breaks on the rocks
  • Book or board game: for cozy evenings indoors
  • Corkscrew: we have them in the cabins, but double-check
  • Head torch: it gets dark early in autumn, perfect for evening walks
